Systems Administrator

Location: Remote / Montreal, Canada
Employment Type: Contract

We are looking for a self-directed, proficient individual to work on systems administration in Montreal, Canada. Most of the role can be done remotely, but there will be occasional in-person work as needed. On-call work is needed only if there is downtime or emergencies, but our automation and monitoring takes care of most of this already, and issues are rare.

Responsibilities:

• Managing servers, workstations, and laptops using the mgmt software
• Writing and extending modules in mcl for the mgmt software project
• Providing user support
• Performing occasional onsite sysadmin tasks, including setting up computers
• Occasionally installing computer and networking equipment onsite, including low-voltage Ethernet cabling
• Supporting related infrastructure maintenance and deployment tasks

Required skills and experience:

• Intermediate GNU+Linux skills in a .rpm based environment
• Intermediate proficiency with git
• Basic golang experience
• Basic proficiency with bash
• Basic systems administration and/or systems engineering experience
• Basic virtualization experience using libvirt/kvm/qemu
• Basic proficiency with IPv4 networking
• Basic proficiency with systemd
• Ability to safely move and install typical computer and networking equipment and occasionally work from a stepladder
• Internally motivated, autodidact
• Ability to learn to use the mgmt config tool
• Driver’s licence and vehicle for visiting sites around Montreal, Canada (kilometres are reimbursed)
• Proficient communication in English (both written and spoken)
• University degree (not necessarily software-related) or relevant experience
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
